Silver is used in films to enhance its sensitivity to transmitted x-rays. A sheet of x-ray film can contain up to 2.% silver in its emulsion after it has been developed. This extracted film can be recycled and used to create more film products.

The types of films you can send for recovery include medical x-ray film, dental x-ray film, magnetic imaging laser digital film, CT scans mammograms, ultrasound, and other dry view films. Most companies also accept the older BMX film which were replaced by 1976 and CMS used in the 1970s.
METHODS USED TO EXTRACT SILVER from FILM
There are primarily three methods used to reclaim silver from x-ray. Silver is reclaimed through burning, oxidation or stripping the silver from the film using different solutions. The most common method for large amounts of film is stripping.
After your film is received at the factory it is weighted then dumped into a shredder. The shredder tears the film into small pieces so it can be placed into a bath to begin the extraction process. The bath contains chemicals which remove the coating from the surface of the film. This coating contains the silver used to coat the film. The shredded film is removed from the bath so the solution containing the silver is left. Depending on the method used, the solution containing the silver dust is heated to form small goblets of silver.
