In a USA Today Magazine article going back to June of 1996, the merits of silver recovery from X-ray film were discussed with the Chemical Engineering Department of Japan’s University of Osaka Prefecture, Professor Haruo Ishikawa. According to Professor Ishikawa, approximately 1/3 of the world’s silver is used in X-ray films, which hold about two percent by weight of the precious metal within the emulsion layers of each film. Original methods of burning the films to extract the silver resulted in an environmental hazard and film that could not be reused.

To this end, the professor and his colleagues developed a silver recycler process that would also allow for xray recycling using enzymes to break down the gelatin layers in the films. The result is the release of more pure silver collected into a solution. Further processing extracts the silver and saves the film to be recycled, effectively allowing for xray film recycling. This method produces no pollution and renders only high-grade pure silver.

Aside from scrap metal recycling, Industrial Surplus Inc. in San Bernardino, CA is one of the recovery companies prepared to pick up, recover and recycle these films from hospitals, medical clinics, chiropractor’s offices and dentist’s offices, for recovery of dental Xray film. Non-destructive testing or NDT film, also known as radiographic film, can also have the silver recovered. The handling of all medical records remains in compliance with HIPPA regulations as well as EPA guidelines. Certification can be obtained as evidence that all records were properly destroyed in the process.

As a scrap metal recycling company, Industrial Surplus Inc. has been specializing in helping companies to liquidate surplus inventory and equipment. Everything is accomplished as a single vendor, saving time and money. from offer to shipping arrangements to having the whole yard cleared, Industrial is a scrap metal buyer thoroughly committed to the customer.

from humble beginnings to full-service recovery operations, Industrial continues to perform as a scrap metal buyer across the nation. They will send a purchasing agent to any location to make an offer for the best scrap metal prices on materials to be recycled.
